The Airport Improvement Program (AIP) airport grant program funds airport infrastructure projects such as runways, taxiways, airport signage, airport lighting, and airport markings with the goal of strengthening U.S. aviation infrastructure.

Airports are entitled to a certain amount of AIP funding each year based on passenger volume. If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, then the FAA can supplement their entitlements with discretionary funding.

On September 1, 2020 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will award more than $1.2 billion in additional airport safety and infrastructure grants. Of the $1.2 billion, in this round more than $1 billion is from the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and $152 million is in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act with a 100 percent federal share. Awards will be made to 405 airports in 50 states as well as Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Palau, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“This $1.2 billion federal investment will improve our nation’s airport infrastructure, enhance safety, and strengthen growth in local communities, which is especially important as the economy recovers from COVID-19,” said Secretary Chao.

The complete listing of awards can be found here. Airports in the CSG East region that received awards are listed below.
