Some progress

While progress is being made, infection rates, deaths, and hospitalizations are level — not declining. The prevalence of COVID-19 is compounded by the emergence of variants of the virus. As the pandemic is far from over, increasing the number of people who are vaccinated is essential. There is significant variation among state vaccine policies and procedures compounded by the complexity of managing the distribution and administration of the vaccine.

The goal is to achieve herd immunity — where enough people are vaccinated or have had the infection and thus, the spread of the virus is reduced. Also, of note is the need to address racial and ethnic disparities to assure equity in the distribution of the vaccine. Preventive measures such as mask wearing, social distancing, and limiting exposure to others who are not vaccinated or are not part of one’s household are essential to reducing the illnesses and deaths associated with COVID-19.
