How Do We Have a Better Education Conversation?
Politics have played an increasingly contentious role in education policy in recent months. Policymakers and parents continue to clash over Critical Race Theory, book banning and public health mandates. Meanwhile, as schools are now dominated by Black, Brown, Indigenous and Asian-Pacific Islander students, the state of education in American is faced with an enormous crisis in funding, literacy, a teacher shortage and academic achievement gaps. New and innovative education models such as virtual learning and hybrid approaches show promise, but most school systems are still wedded to traditional school models. Reading illiteracy is still high, especially among Black students, math and science proficiency is low and there is a fear that America’s K-12 students are not being adequately prepared. What is the education conversation we should be having? How can advocates, families and policymakers truly collaborate on the issues that really count? What sort of new education models should communities and lawmakers be considering and implementing?
