Briefing on Ithaca’s Ambitious Plan to Decarbonize Buildings
In this virtual discussion, Dr. Luis Aguirre-Torres, Sustainability Director of Ithaca, New York, discussed the city’s first-in-the-nation plan to decarbonize all of its buildings by 2030. As part of the plan, the city aims to retrofit its 6,000 residential and commercial buildings with electric systems for heating and cooling and with electric appliances, in a bid to meet Ithaca’s broader goal of becoming a carbon-neutral city by the end of the decade. Dr. Aguirre-Torres described how city officials are working to implement and finance this ambitious program, which could serve as a model for municipalities across the nation.
The session was moderated by Massachusetts State Senator Marc Pacheco, Co-Chair, CSG East Energy and Environment Committee, and Founding Chair, CSG State Legislative Climate Alliance.
